Well Woman Exam Q & A

What is the importance of a well-woman exam?

In private practice for over two decades, Dr. Kornreich sees women of all ages. Through preventive screenings, a physical examination and a discussion of your medical history and lifestyle, Dr. Kornreich will evaluate your overall general gynecological health. This annual well-woman visit will also provide an opportunity for you to address any concerns about your health, ranging from birth control to management of menopausal symptoms.

What does a well-woman exam entail?

A well-woman exam is individualized to each patient, based not only on age, but also, family history, past health history, risk factors, and lifestyle. Based on these considerations, specific screenings and testing may differ among women, however, each exam will include a breast and pelvic exam, vital signs, as well as a Pap smear when indicated.

What additional screenings may be part of my exam?

Depending on your personal history and symptoms, screening recommendations and counseling will be offered. Your lab work may include a hormonal evaluation, a vitamin D level, a thyroid panel, testing for anemia and/or any other appropriate recommended testing.

Screening and testing may differ among women. If you’re in a sexually active relationship, STD testing may be recommended. Sexually transmitted diseases are also on the rise among older women. Many start new sexual relationships after being widowed or divorced and are unaware that they’re at risk. Additionally, based on your age and other potential risk factors, appropriate recommendations will be made for routine mammogram, bone density, pelvic ultrasound, and colonoscopy.

Dr. Kornreich manages each patient based on his or her individual needs. She considers herself a partner in your health care and encourages you to live an active and healthy lifestyle.
